Redskins Dust Off Their Track Shoes

The cry of "Plaster, Plaster" echoed across the practice field yesterday as the Washington Redskins continued their preparations for Sunday's game against the expansion Seattle Seahawks. A scrambler is coming to town, and the Redskins say they'll be ready for him.

The Redskins expect to face a number of these frantic situations on Sunday because of Seahawk quarterback Jim Zorn, a daring young man who burned the St Louis Cardinals for 292 yards and two touchdowns through the air, and ran for 26 yards more and another touchdown.

"He's very dangerous, and he's no fluke," said Redskin scout Kirk Mee, who has seen Zorn and Co. play all seven of their games.

"When he gets in there, his people get very excited and he makes things happen, not only with his throwing but with his running too," says Mee. "He's like any scrambler. It's almost an instinct, and he throws really well on the run. He's got a good arm. He can throw deep and he also throws well against the grain."

"He's very unpredictable too," said defensive coach Ralph Hawkins. "He's going to be one of the best scrambling quarterbacks in the league if he holds up. He's got a strong arm and a nice touch too.

"We have to keep him in trouble, contain him, keep him in the pocket and make him throw where he doesn't want to throw. He impressed me in the films I saw, and he's only going to get better."

George Allen is clearly concerned. Yesterday, he complained about another "mediocre" practice, and when a reporter told him that some people are saying that the Redskins should have an easy time of it, there was a small explosion.

"That's completely ridiculous," Allen said. "Anybody who believes that is out of their mind. I hope our players don't get into that trap."

Then he walked away.
