July 13, 1985 Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
It was overcast and raining when we reached Gibbon Falls but we had live entertainment. A tourist had put a vanilla wafer on the end of his fishing line and was "fishing" for chipmunks! Was it really necessary to have a No Diving sign above 3' rapids? I guess not everyone is as enlightened as we are, after all they were swimming in near-freezing water.

We found a narrow road between Norris & Canyon which took us to Virginia Cascades. We pulled over for the Grebe Lake trailhead but the rather definite bear warnings scared me. I wanted to take an itsy-bitsy hike to the trailhead just to get some brochures but I was too scared. Bob was jumpy too -- we didn't want to meet up with Mr. Grizzly! Bob got the pamphlets while I hung back under the guise of taking a picture but he ran all the way back to the car! It was really scary!

From the safety of the car, we stopped in a meadow to look for bears. Never saw one. Popked around in Canyon Village, watched a short movie, talked to a ranger, shopped and ate. Drove around looking for a good spot to view the sunset. Almost hit a baby deer -- mama was out with her two fawns for a twilight stroll!                  [continue reading...]
