July 14, 1985 Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Slept in till 7am, awoke to a beautiful day. Drove up North to the Mt. Washburn trailhead. Saw several moose along the way. A female cross the road and a dufus buck stumbled behind her. There were heavy grizzly warnings and it was a L-O-N-G way to the summit - not a trail for us! We headed North to Tower Falls. The Falls looked neat from the overlook, but the view from the 1/2 mile hike to the brink was 10 times more impressive! The spray of the falls felt great on our skin.

Bought lots of souvineers. They had some neat Christmas ornaments but they were $6-12. I did buy one though, I couldn't resist. Saw a great sign: No Sunday beer sales ... until after 12:00 noon.

We drove around taking every side road we could find. There were some beautiful meadows. We took a side trip by Calcamite Springs which isn't really a spring, just a canyon with basaltic columns a huge, fast river. We drove on a 6-mile one way road to what I call Butterfly Meadows -- the real name is Blacktail Plateau Drive. There were 2 dozen thousand butterflies; at one point they were swarming around an elk carcass. We accidentally discovered Undine Falls, which is one of the neatest falls we've seen.

We drove up to Mammoth, and then to Gardiner to get pictures of the arches you
                 see above.         [continue reading...]
