July 15, 1985 Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
This morning was designated Canyon Day. After breakfast we headed up to Inspiration Point for an inspirational view. It didn't disappoint. Next we saw a grand view at Grand View. At 11:15 we looked out over Lookout Point. But the exceptional views came from Red Rock Point trail. We met a couple of hikers on the trail, one of whom works at Yellowstone in summer. He said you live in dorms and they provide your meals -- he loves it. We walked to the Brink of the Falls and loved it. We drove to the next lookout, they walked, and still they beat us! The trail was fun but tiring. We didn't intend to go down Uncle Tom's Trail with all it's steps but our new friends were there and we were walking and talking with them, and next thing we knew we were there. There was a beautiful rainbow over the falls and it was so peaceful there. But it was really, really tough going. As we stopped for a rest, a little boy yelled down to his folks, "What's wrong, Mommy? Come on up!" The little creep! I was ready to get a harness and let him pull me on up!

Our new friends John and Ken were on the opposite side of the canyon than where they'd first started so we picked up the hitchhikers and took them to their car. Next they're headed to Avalanche Peak to do some climbing. We went back to Artist Point, did some laundry, then went to the Canyon Dining Room for dinner and drinks on our last night in Yellowstone.
