"We lost a tough game, but I've been at this too long to get frustrated...this
was not going to be an overnight thing. We just stay the course and get better."
Seattle Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren
Seattle Seahawks 10 - San Diego Chargers 13
Wow! Forget the outcome, that was one heartstopper of a game!! My heart was absolutely racing!
San Diego didn't really beat us. We pretty much beat ourselves. How can a team get 4 interceptions and
not win the game? It's easily explained actually. No offense.
This wasn't Kitna's finest game. I'm not prepared to jump all over him because he played ... average ... but
I think we all knew coming into this game that it would take more than average play to reach the
top rung of the AFC West ladder. Yes, Kitna threw an interception. That doesn't worry me. In fact, I can
only think of one play Kitna made that I didn't really approve of, that being the play near the end zone when
he saw that the defensive coverage was solid so he opted to run for the first down and didn't make it.
I think he's entitled to that slight mistake.
What I didn't see was an over and above effort to make things happen. He was good but he was conservative when
perhaps we needed more.
Which makes me wonder about our play calling today. Where was it? A friend of mine sent me a message saying
that it looked a lot like the days of Erickson. I thought it looked a bit Bratkowski-ish myself. I wonder
what that was about?
Oddly enough, DAR-RYL Williams and Jay Bellamy missed some tackles today. That doesn't happen very often,
especially with both of them making mistakes. I wonder why that happened? Were they covering more of the
field than usual? By the way, they both had some awesome tackles, too.
We had our first lucky break when Carney missed the field goal from 42 yards out. That could have been
the momentum lift that we needed. It wasn't.
We had our first good play when Special Teams downed our punt inside the 5 yard line. That didn't quite do it
for us either though.
And then LaBounty had a terrific sack at just the right time. Still we didn't lift.
Frustrating, huh?
THEN, finally, in a series of odd occurences, we managed a touchdown. It started with a San Diego turnover.
Brian Walker, #25 for those of you who were saying, "Walker? Who's Walker?" (I'm guilty!) -- intercepted
a pass. Then San Diego jumped off-sides, giving us a free five yards. Thank you San Diego!
Then on a long third down attempt, Pritchard broke out across the middle for a crucial 13 yard reception and a first
down to keep the drive alive!!! That was awesome! (Why didn't we run more routes like that throughout the game?)
Kitna threw to Dawkins in the end zone with the ball falling incomplete, but a pass interference flag was thrown against the
Chargers. Who would have guessed that the touchdown pass would be Kitna to Mili??? That one caught San Diego off guard --
and most of the rest of us too!!!!
Canty had a nice interception. Not that we knew what to do with the ball after it became ours.
Ohhhh, but wasn't it fun when Sam Adams tapped the ball and it came down in Cortez Kennedy's arms!!!
It was FINE to see Tez lumbering down the field with the ball!! He did a great job, don't you think?!?!
Oh, plays like that are SO much fun!!! Did you see him hurdle a player?!?! hee hee!!
And then Willie Williams ended up with an interception near the goal line, saving a Charger score!! And STILL
we couldn't get that momentum to go with us.
Frustrating game to be sure. Including the Peterson missed field goal.
It's back to the Kingdome next week to take on Buffalo. I hope the players are ready.
If we're to be the contenders we think we can be, we've got to step it up a notch. We weren't
disastrous today by any means, but we need more.
And I believe our guys have more to give!
Goooooooo SEAHAWKS!!!
(And did you hear about Mirer and the Jets??? Looks like he might have
the starting job back!)
