"I'm not really sure what happened."

-- Kansas City Chiefs Linebacker Marvcus Patton

Seattle Seahawks 31 - Kansas City Chiefs 19

Our beloved Seahawks

The game seemed to fly by. I couldn't believe the first quarter ended so quickly! I had no idea why the referees blew the whistles at the two minute warning! I was having so much fun the time passed without a chance to look at the clock! At the end of the first half, the score was 14-13 in the Seahawks favor. Ricky Watters was having a great day with two touchdowns already, and Peterson had been perfect with his PATs. I wasn't confident that we'd win the game but I felt that the Seahawks had a slight advantage in momentum. We'd held the Chiefs defensively and we had some clutch plays on offense to keep our drives alive. I wasn't prepared to relax but I was feeling pretty good about where we were!

Chiefs CheerleadersI was very surprised when the game resumed after half-time and the stadium was half empty. The Chiefs fans were late to get back to their seats -- what a difference that made! It was practically quiet! QUITE a change from the first half of the game. I thought the Chiefs came back from half time flat and they never did quite regain full strength.

The Seahawks took the lead comfortably with a Peterson field goal and then a terrific reception by Sean Dawkins for a touchdown! It was at that point that the fans turned.

All of the sudden the Seahawks abuse stopped and the Grbac abuse started. The booing had been coming in spurts throughout the game but suddenly it was loud and constant. The fans turned on the team.

View from the 3rd Level Those of you who know me know that I'm not ever for booing, even when Grbac ran towards the sidelines to avoid a sack, throwing the pass after he went out of bounds resulting in a big loss on the play! Why would the fans add to Grbac's troubles when he was struggling to avoid a sack? Go ahead, blame Elvis but blame the offensive line for not giving him protection too! (And while you're at it, compliment the Seahawks defense!! hee hee!) Plain and simple, booing doesn't help your team. If anything it gives a boost to the defense! Our Seahawks HAD to feel good to know that they were the cause for the Chiefs fans turning against their offense!

WE were creating a disturbance. WE were taking the fans out of the game. WE were dominating and the fans knew it! That had to be an ego-builder for the Seahawks!

And how does it feel knowing that we can beat opposing teams, opposing fans and even opposing stadiums!!!

That's when things became a bit more troublesome in the stands. The fans behind us who had been drinking steadily started taking it personally. I kept an eye out for security just in case it became necessary. When the Seahawks made great plays on offense or defense, I remained seated.

Pre-game practice Um...most of the time anyway! Hey, it's an involuntary action to jump to my feet! :-)

Seriously, I tried to keep my excitement inside. Tempers flared behind us. It wasn't directed at us so much as it was at the Chiefs, and for anyone who's interested, women sports fans can be vicious!! Don't ever doubt it! I thought two women behind us might start throwing punches at each other...and they were supposed to be friends! The problems never developed into more than a lot of verbal lashing but it was touch and go there for a little while.

Every true Seahawks fan should think about scenes like that and promise to make the Seahawks a team that can be as proud of its fans as we are of the players. Let's keep it classy on and off the field!!

The Chiefs scored to narrow the lead to 5 points after a failed two point conversion. It was at that point that I got a little nervous, wondering if we could hold on to the lead!

There was one play I didn't understand. Maybe one of you can explain it to me. We were at the 30 yard line on 4th down and we didn't try for a field goal! Instead we took a delay of game penalty, moved back 5 yards and then punted to the Chiefs. I don't understand that! At the 30 yard line, the punt would have been about 45 yards, right? That's not out of range for a field goal kicker! I know it was a windy day...was that the deciding factor in Holmgren's decision not to go for the score?

[Note: Thanks to those who have written to explain the call. We went for a field goal in the San Diego game, missed, gave the Chargers great field position and they ended up winning the game. Holmgren wasn't going to allow that to happen, especially given the windy circumstances.]

My daughter and IWith about 5 minutes left in the game, the Chiefs had to punt to us and the exodus of fans began. Shortly thereafter the Seahawks made it within the 5 yard line on a great Watters run, and those fans who were still seated took to the aisles to leave. When Chris Canty intercepted a pass to end Kansas City's drive we were close to outnumbering the Chiefs fans in the stadium! We ran out the clock and finished the game with a decisive victory!

It was a GREAT win for the Seahawks! Personally I think the Chiefs underestimated us. Holmgren gets credit for having us mentally prepared and Kitna gets credit for getting the job done even on an off day. (Many of his passes were too high and some had too much velocity!) Our offensive line was incredible! Kitna had all kinds of time to check off! All week the Kansas City press said the secret to the game was to pressure Kitna from the start. He was hurried a couple of times but he wasn't sacked. Our defense was hurting but they still came up with big plays! I love the way our backups play! Time and time again we've had to rely on them and they've come through for us beautifully!

To the Chiefs credit, Grbac had a great game. His fakes caught me off guard several times. I know he's not loved in Kansas City, and I heard the chants for Moon to come on to the field, but I thought he had a good game. The fans didn't appreciate all the running plays. Each time they ran up the middle, they'd boo and scream "Pass the ball". They seemed to think the play calling was predictable. When I asked them if they liked Gunther Cunningham, they were fairly non-committal but generally approved of him. (Though they don't like his yellow glasses!)

On the way home, I listened to a Chiefs radio show. The general consensus was that the Chiefs didn't lose, the Seahawks won. In fact, the host said time and time again that the Seahawks are THE best team he's seen this season, including Jacksonville. He gave us many, many compliments. I was also surprised to hear a caller put in a plea to the fans to support the team and show more respect at the game. He noted that the KC fans are known for being great supporters of the Chiefs and he urged fans to maintain class and dignity rather than continually booing the team they love.

All in all...a great day to be at Arrowhead! That was the first victory I've seen there and it felt GREAT!!! We're 8-2 on the season now!! WOOOO HOOOO!! Now let's go get Tampa Bay!!
