"We came into a very tough stadium, a difficult place to win a
football game."
-- Seattle Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren
Seattle Seahawks 31 - Kansas City Chiefs 19
Prior to kick-off the Chiefs did their usual mutilation of a Seahawk dummy.
It's happened at every game I've been to and today was no exception. This time
it was a seachicken who was attacked by something that looked like a Teletubby gone wrong!
The crowd loved the mauling, though I had to chuckle that the seachicken was wearing
a Rick Mirer jersey!! Poor Rick! Even after he's been a Bear, a Packer and a Jet he
still gets no respect.
Arrowhead is a stadium with a lot of tradition. The fans are there to have a good time. It starts hours
before the game with some of the best tailgating in the NFL. Unfortunately there is a big drawback to the
party atmosphere. In fact, the entire row behind us was a drawback!! Let's just say they'd had more than a bit too much to drink
before the game even started, let alone after the vials of tequila were passed around. We were suffering through some pretty foul remarks directed at us and at each of our players
on the field. When we stood up to cheer we were told rudely (and obscenely) to sit back down. When we had a good play, the Chiefs fans behind
us were quick to show us how NOT to use the English language in front of a 13 year old. Most of it was good natured, though not exactly what I wanted my 13 year old
daughter to endure, but fans take football very seriously and emotionally so I was a bit on edge and careful to
keep my thoughts to myself.
I wasn't taking any chances. I'd learned my lesson from the Seachicken!
Our first possession ended in a punt, which I found disappointing. I was so hoping that we'd be able to come onto the field
and declare our presence. I get greedy sometimes! I wanted a touchdown right from the start!
On the Chiefs' first possession,
they scored a field goal. I was proud of our defensive line for making a tough red zone stance, especially since we were hurting
on defense due to injuries, but I admit that I wondered if the Arrowhead curse was still with us. I just didn't want our team to lose their positive
attitude.
The crowd was very much into the game. When the Seahawks had the ball, they were screaming at the top of their lungs
and pounding on the backs of empty seats in the stadium. It was deafening. Fortunately Coach Holmgren prepares the team for that by piping the noise of screaming fans
into the practice stadium, so while it may have been difficult to hear on the field, we knew how to handle the situation! I can't say enough about Kitna's leadership! He
never seems to get shook and boy, were the fans trying to shake us!
