"This team believes in me. They count on me and I let them down
twice today."
-- Seattle Seahawks Ricky Watters
Seahawks 21 - Raiders 30
Relax. We'll survive. It's OK.
That's what I said last week. This week I'm not prepared to go so lightly on our boys.
I'm mad. And I'm hurt. It's one thing to give up a game after several consecutive wins.
Everyone is entitled to an off day, even everyone's favorite Jon Kitna. It's quite another
to do the same thing the very next week in a game we needed to win. The AFC is now a wide
open race, especially since Kansas City was able to defeat the Broncos today. What should
have been a sure thing for the Seahawks is suddenly in jeopardy. Our speculation of home
field advantage in the play-offs is no longer a consideration...we just want to get there.
I'm mad! We deserve better than that. On our first drive in the second half, we came out with
the desire to win. We were on fire, playing with passion to get back into the game! Nothing was going to stop
us!
And then as quickly as we gained momentum, we lost it. And we never got it back.
The fumbles and the interceptions didn't help things obviously. Kitna had an off day...again.
I don't want to hear the excuse that in this type of offense, if the quarterback sputters, the whole
team sputters. If the quarterback is sputtering, the other team members are going to have to step up
and do something extra special. I don't know what it is. But they do. And they didn't do it today.
There were no miracle receptions. There were no amazing special teams plays. There were no big holes
found by running backs to spark the team. We were flat. The whole team. Offense and defense.
The two fumbles by Ricky Watters were unfortunate, especially since he's not prone to fumbling. Our
defense was way too lax. We missed tackles, we didn't wrap up on tackles, and our coverage was too soft.
We missed DAR-RYL Williams. I hope he's back soon. Joey Galloway had a beautiful pass thrown
right to his hands...and he dropped it. Does anyone else wonder if perhaps Joey's reunion with the
team has thrown off the timing between Kitna and his other receivers? It's just a thought that keeps
running through my mind. Are we sure his return hasn't been more disruptive than his absence?
His 31 yard touchdown play was great though, and I thought for a while that might be just the spark
we needed.
We didn't have any sacks today. In fact, Gannon had all day to find his receivers. Kitna was only sacked
once but he was pressured a lot. There were way too many tipped passes thrown by Kitna.
Gannon got off all too easy.
Did we do anything right? Yes, of course! The touchdown by Ricky Watters at the end of the first half
was a big boost. Ricky could have been tackled before crossing the goal line but he just kept running,
twisting in other directions to avoid a tackle and simply not stopping till he crossed the line!
That is what Ricky brings to our team! His leadership and efforts are terrific!
The touchdown drive that ended with a 3 yard scoring pass to Dawkins was a nicely orchestrated
drive. In fact our receivers in the second half had some very nice plays.
It was a fairly clean game! There were only a few flags thrown. There was some holding
that wasn't called but for the most part it was good officiating. I'm not sure one of the
Raider touchdowns was really a touchdown but I doubt the call would have been overturned
even if we'd challenged it.
Wasn't it fun
to see Kitna running with the ball?! He's not known for scrambling but when he did so today we
were able to get first downs! Good for him!!
Our hearts slumped when Canty was driven off the field immobilized. The preliminary
report is that he had a concussion. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
Overall it was a disappointing day. I'd like to say I'm taking it better than I am but I'm still
angry with our boys. They can do better.
And they must.
