Chapter 9: Backs to the wall
I'd been slugged by experts in my time. Cops, criminals, the odd jealous husband, those Girl Scouts I stiffed for the cookie money.
Nothing new in that. But the blow I felt inside my mind right then was worse than any of them. Everything was falling into place like a two ton jigsaw puzzle.
But the conclusion was too hard to comprehend. The only answer that made sense made no sense at all.
I needed time to think, and some extra brains to help me out. And one brain in particular.
I put the call through, and the voice at the other end was as cool, calm and reliable as ever.
“Dave, it’s Chuck. I could use a little help right now ...”
