Sept. 27, 2007 - Calistoga, California Happy Birthday, Mika! Today my oldest daughter turned 21 years old!! We started this morning on the road. We had a long, hard day of driving ahead. Our first stop was in Weed, California, and I really wanted a t-shirt but the only ones they sold were too druggy. Weed, written in the Coca Cola font. Got weed? written like the Got milk? ads. I heart Weed. Stuff like that. I thought they'd have something a lot more clever that I could actually wear in public but no.
We couldn't find a local place to have lunch along the Interstate (we left the coast to make better time) so we ate at Arby's. I miss the quaint eateries along the coast. At some point we had to turn off the highway to get to this town we're in right now, Calistoga, California. We were in the middle of nowhere ... fields and fields of olive orchards, vineyards, cattle farms, grain bins ... not at all what I expected. Much more rural than I'd imagined. One interesting thing of note were trucks upon trucks hauling loads of garlic cloves. That's some serious garlic! Then we started getting into mountain passes that were very curvy and treacherous ... I'm glad Craig was driving because if I had been behind the wheel we'd still be trying to get through that last mountain pass! It's some |
