Essendon 13.17.95 - Richmond 13.19.97

Last week I said ...

OH HAPPY DAY!!!!!!!!!!! NOTHING makes me happier than when we beat CARLTON!!

Well, an ugly win over Essendon isn't quite the same but it's delicious in its own rite!!!

By now everyone knows about the 36 behinds that were kicked in perfect weather. Well, yes, I don't know what to say about that except ... WHO CARES? We won!!! I'm just pleased to have won the last 3 games after starting the season with 3 losses! If we stunk, Essendon stunk too. Let's just take the win, learn from it and move forward!

The star of the show surely was Dean Polo, who said, "Even before I picked it up, I just said 'goal'. I knew I was going to kick it, so I've grabbed it and just run. I knew I was going to go for it and she came off, surprisingly."

You've gotta love that!

Hi Becky!
Just wanted to be first in with the news. I'll write more tomorrow, but the Tigers won by 2 points in a nail biter!

I may even have to do 2 players of the week. Greg Tivendale as I said for his 150th, and he did contribute too and probably young Dean Polo, his first game and he kicked 3 goals, one of them the winning goal and was named BOG.

Oh God I am so excited!

Watch the tape - * you * aren't going to believe how many ways both teams found to miss the goals!

We'll take the win, but if we can't kick better than we did then Sydney is going to kill us next Saturday!

Hi Becky,
I watched the game last night. They had about half an hour of prematch entertainment. Michael Long and Kathy Freeman were there. The TV station had a potted history of Aboriginal players in the AFL - did you know that 1 in 10 players in the AFL is now Aboriginal, or has aboriginal ancestory? I had no idea it was that many. They had a lady descended from the traditional aboriginal owners of the land the MCG is built on present the coaches and captains of the two teams with branches of a plant, it what was said to be a traditional welcome.

It was a funny game. In the second quarter the teams kicked one goal and seventeen points between them! And it wasn't windy. I was very worried when Essendon made a charge in the last quarter and kicked 4 in a row to grab the lead (by 8 points I think). But fortunately we were able to get a couple and have our noses in front at the final siren. Gee that new player Dean Polo played a great game for his debut. He was awarded man of the match.
