Richmond Football -- Round 16!

If you've been with me this long, you already know that I'm no footy expert! If you're new to my site, the disclaimer is at the bottom of the page! Please read it so you know where I'm coming from!! Whether you're new to the sport or a seasoned veteran, your comments and questions are always welcome! Send 'em to me and I'll share them here!

Richmond 9.8.62 - Essendon 20.11.131

Oh, my breaking heart. It just kills me to see a score like this.

Is there any point in discussing the merits of this game? Were there even any merits to discuss? YES!! Look at these photos from the Richmond Football Club website! Look at the intensity. Look at the determination.

I can't say what's gone wrong with the Richmond club -- I don't know why we've been faring so poorly. But there ARE moments worth celebrating and there ARE players who still want to win, who still put forth effort. Is it enough? Unfortunately it's apparently not, but they're still our beloved Tigers and I for one am willing to stand beside them and barrack for them throughout the season even though we won't be seeing the finals this year.

Now I'd like to talk about something a little different, if I may have your indulgence.

This week I was privileged enough to get to watch some Richmond games that had been taped earlier in the season. What I saw was astounding. Watching video of a game is so different than listening to the audio feed. I've just GOT to share some of the magic of what I discovered when I viewed the tapes. (Note: Thanks SO much to my Aussie mate for sending me the videos! You've no idea how much I love watching the footy!)

Earlier this week I reached into the box of videos and pulled out a tape, not knowing what was on the video. It happened to be the Richmond/Roos game from Round 11. I laughed, I cried, it moved me, Bob! (You've got to be familiar with VeggieTales to fully understand that expression!) What a sensational game! From the opening bounce to the final siren, I loved every minute of it despite the fact that Richmond lost the game. I've revised my game day write-up of that round to share the excitement I felt as I watched our Tigers!! If you'd like to read it, click here!

When I finished that game, I pulled a second tape out of the box. This time it was the Essendon game from Round 7. We clearly dominated despite poor kicking accuracy that week! Ohhh, that was a fun game to listen to live and it's a fun game to watch in video replay!

I've been SO proud of our Tigers as I've watched these videos! I just can't say it enough -- we showed so much promise! If we'd have had a bit more luck in winning the close games, well, the whole season might be different! Who knows how that would have played to the players' morale.

I know the last part of this season has gone south, as they say in the US. But I'm seeing so much to build on for next season! I'm seeing so much talent! I don't have the answers for harnessing that talent, but I don't think we're as bad as the ladder makes it appear.

GOOOOOO TIGERS!! I love Richmond footy!

From Pelic:
Hey Becky,

This season has gone from good to great to average to bad and now to shocking. Eight losses in a row. It will be lucky if Richmond can even rack up another win this season. Got Footscray next week who just won, got Fremantle away, got Port Adelaide, got Essendon and Hawthorn who are in form and got St Kilda who are playing much better than us at the moment. About Friday's game, I have been watching Richmond since I was seven which was about 9 years ago and I can safely say that that was one of the most pathetic performances by Richmond that I have ever seen. I was almost in tears in the last quarter cause I could not believe what I was seeing. My best mate didn't cut me any slack either. All his cheering and buzzing made me want to punch a hole in the wall. I also lost a bet and had to wear a Collingwood jersey to my game on Saturday. It was degrading to the highest degree. I read a news article which I sadly have to agree with. It is time for all the olds to go along with the middle aged guys who are playing awful like Hilton and Biddiscombe and also it is time for the board to consider the position of Danny Frawley. But I must give my raps to Mark Coughlan and Clinton King. King didn't get much time and I have been very critical of him but he seemed to be one of two to do things right. Good on him. I can remember coming ninth being one of the most hurtful things ever but Friday night just beat it.

I will leave it there so I can sulk a bit more about Richmond. Have a good week
