Richmond Football -- Round 11!

If you've been with me this long, you already know that I'm no footy expert! If you're new to my site, the disclaimer is at the bottom of the page! Please read it so you know where I'm coming from!!

Whether you're new to the sport or a seasoned veteran, your comments and questions are always welcome! Send 'em to me and I'll share them here!

Richmond 13.11.89 - Kangaroos 13.14.92

Once again I didn't get to listen to the game because it was played in the middle of my night. Boo! Once again if you want to read about the details of the game, you can get your fill at the AFL.com website or the Richmond Tigers website.

Screeeeeeeech! WAIT! Hold that thought! It's 15 July and I've just watched the video tape of the first half of this game! WOOOOOO HOOOOOO TIGERS!!!! What a game this is!! Richmond fans, BE PROUD of our Tigers!! We put up quite a fight!

Bear with me please as I tell you where I'm coming from tonight. I love listening to the audio feed of a live game! It's SO exciting! I've not had the pleasure of watching a live footy game on TV or in person this season, and although I enjoy the video replays of games it's not the same as watching a game live. There's an element of suspense in a live game that isn't there when you know the outcome of the game. Despite that, this Tigers/Roos game has to be one of my all time favorite games! I have enjoyed it SO much that it's killing me to put it on pause to go to bed tonight! I am filled with SO much Fighting Tiger spirit right now! GOOOOO YOU TIGES!!! I know we're going to lose but I'm still so proud of our Tigers! I feel yellow and black through and through!! When I show an AFL tape to a friend to introduce them to Aussie Rules, THIS is the game I'm going to show them! I'm on the edge of my chair, loving every minute!!

If you will indulge me again, I'd like to do one of those big, bad no-nos. I want to talk politics.

This game received a lot of hype due to the return of Jason McCartney. For those of you living under a rock ... er, um, I mean, for those of you who may not know ... Jason was injured in the bombing of a nightclub in Bali several months ago. It looked as though his football career was over; in fact, it was touch and go for a while as to whether or not he'd survive. At one point his blood pressure dropped dangerously low and things were not looking good at all. But survive he did, and this day, this game, this celebration was for Jason and for all the families and friends who lost loved ones in the horrible blast in Bali.

I can't help but be moved by the celebration. The words of encouragement and the support given to Jason and his family are remarkable. I am so moved by the tribute given by the footy community. No matter what you think of the skill of Jason McCartney or whether or not you like the Roos, the football world did right tonight. They remembered what's important and made time to talk about it. I'm so proud to be a fan of Australian Rules Football.

Last week I promised to talk about another tradition in Australian Rules Football that is major cool! If you're not used to seeing it, the first time you do you're going to be wondering what's going on! Once you're used to it, you can't wait for it to happen!! What is it, you ask? The club song, of course!

All bias aside, Richmond has one of the coolest songs, if not THE coolest song, in the league! When we win, the boys stand in a circle, arms around each other, the canorous melody wafting through the room.

Er ... strike that. They're footy players, not musicians. There's nothing canorous about the singing of the song, nor does it qualify as a melody!

But it's TONS of fun and if you can't sing it, then shout it like the boys do!!

Oh, we're from Tigerland,
A fighting fury, we're from Tigerland.
In any weather you will see us with a grin,
Risking head and shin,
If we're behind then never mind,
We'll fight and fight and win.

For we're from Tigerland,
We'll never weaken 'till the final siren's gone,
Like the Tigers of old,
We're strong and we're bold,
For we're from Tiger (YELLOW AND BLACK)
For we're from Tigerland.

They start playing the song before the players leave the field after a victory. When the final siren sounds, the club song booms across the entire stadium! I can't imagine hearing it in person but I'm certain it will give me goosebumps! I do know how proud I've been of the US Footy players after a match when they huddle to sing the song despite the absence of a cheer squad or the stadium of fans, so I KNOW my first time to hear our beloved Tigers' song blaring in the stadium is going to be one of those memories of a lifetime! I can't wait!!!
