West Coast V Richmond
Subiaco Round 9

By Chris Greenway

You would think that a match involving second and third on the ladder would be a pretty interesting match as far as the media were concerned. Nope. There was hardly any media attention. Probably because no one expected either team to be even in the eight let alone top four at this point of the season and also because the match was played in the West. I'm sure the West Australian papers were full of it, the Melbourne ones weren't. Richmond regained Campbell and Houlihan and dropped King and Biddiscombe. King I agreed with, as usual he did nothing against Melbourne, Biddiscombe I felt was a little stiff. However right before the game Staff dropped out, the knee he hyper extended against Melbourne had not come good, without Hall we were effectively without a ruckman against a side boasting Michael Gardiner, the competitions leading ruck. Then Coughlan dropped out as well, which left the midfield unbalanced, so King and Biddiscombe got their spots back. We had no hope. Surprisingly Richmond led the Coasters into the first quarter. Richo was on fire again and Vardy was holding his own in the ruck. Johnson was brilliant and Rodan was busy roving the ground. In the second quarter Campbell dropped out and our supply started to dry up. West Coast's height began to tell on the undersized Tigers. We were still in it, but could lose touch very quickly. The Eagles broke the game apart in the third quarter and kicked Richmond all around the park. To their credit the Tigers did mount a fight back, but the game was over. Both Campbell and Fleming were benched with calf injuries and we were in real trouble. Rodan came back into it in the last quarter, as did Richardson. Chaffey and Johnson worked hard all night, but it was still a 52-point thumping. It sounds odd, but honestly it could have been a lot worse. Hopefully Stafford, Coughlan and Hall will return next week and maybe Campbell will be fitter, with half a game under his belt. Richmond need to overcome the Subiaco curse and beat Sydney. At least it's at the G and I can't remember the last time Sydney beat us in Melbourne.
