Richmond V Melbourne
MCG Round 8
By Chris Greenway
Probably due to the Dees rather variable form this match did not generate a huge amount of media interest. The news that Richardson was going to return created the usual media frenzy around the big forward, but that was pretty much it. Richmond had superior form, but the Demons had just knocked off Port Adelaide so had gained some confidence going in.
The game itself started off as a shootout. Despite the return of Richo the Tigers were not over endowed with height, Ray Hall still being injured, but as Melbourne are considered one of the shorter sides in the competition it was not a problem. The first quarter was largely goal for goal. The human excitement machine David Rodan, did one of those things that only David Rodan can do. Hammered into the back line, took on an opponent much taller and outreached him to the ball to knock it away and into Richmond hands. The action helped to give the Tigers a seven-point buffer at the quarter. The second quarter was more of a struggle and much tighter than the first free flowing quarter and the lead was cut to three points. The shootout continued in the third quarter with defence going out the window, this was odd because Mark Chaffey was one of Richmond's best players from half back flank. Melbourne snatched the lead and went into the last quarter heading the Tigers by two points. We were under the gun and our last quarter was going to need to be a good one. The Demons started better and shot out to a twelve-point advantage. Through Richo, who was playing out of his socks, and the ever improving Greg Stafford Richmond regained the lead. One of the goals of the game came from D-Rod, grabbed the ball out of a messy pack, which we'd been given a free kick from anyway, ran away and kicked it into the second tier of the Southern Stand. Richmond were home by nine points. Richo with 24 disposals and 16 marks, plus 4 goals was the Tigers best with Johnson and Chaffey coming close second. Rodan was good, but only in patches. He did have a nice little cameo interview on comedy/football show: After The Game. Next week will be tough: West Coast at Fortress Subiaco.
