Sunday 13/04/03
Richmond V Fremantle
MCG Round 3

By Chris Greenway

Most of the news articles about this game focused on two things: Fremantle's ability or inability to win away from Fortress Subiaco and Richo's damaged cheekbone. He cracked it in a clash with Scott West in the victory against the Bulldogs. He had surgery to fix it early in the week and there was even some nonsense about him possibly playing in this game. He was named in the team on Thursday night, but anyone with half a brain knew that he would not be lining up. His absence was a blow, but the silver lining was a chance for former Carlton battler; Tim Fleming, to make his debut at senior level.

As this was also Wayne Campbell's 250th game the Tigers had some added incentive to win this one. We started full of running and had the Dockers on the back foot right from the start. Pleasing to me was seeing David Rodan bang one through early. Rodan was extremely dangerous in the first half and that chunky little body was perfectly built for the wet weather football when torrential rain swept across the ground. Rodan slotted through three goals to bring his seasons tally up to 5, if he keeps on with this he may just win the clubs goal-kicking award. He was exciting and hard to beat even when he wasn't kicking goals. At one point he tackled an opponent, forced him to cough up the ball, grabbed the ball before it hit the deck and ran into the forward line with it. With good teamwork we recorded a 48 point win in difficult conditions. If I were giving votes Cambo would have been best on ground, this is looking like being his best season ever and I'm not the only one who thinks that, with Bowden, Hilton, Coughlan, Gaspar and D-Rod all going close to getting votes. A good, solid win with 8 days to recover before the St Kilda clash on Easter Monday.
