A Champion Feeling The Pressure

Until I was 16, my favorite sport was baseball. But because my older brother played football, there was always a lot of pressure on me to do the same. I finally had to give up baseball, after 6 shoulder surgeries. It was okay, because my high school football team won two city championships. When I went on to play football at Washington State University, I admit I was scared to death and still under a ton of pressure. But as a junior, I was named Pac10 Player of the Year. And in 1990, the Atlanta Falcons drafted me in the first round. In '94, I went on to play at Cincinnati, and from there to the Seattle Seahawks.

All the while, I was "hanging out with my partners" doing drugs and alcohol. The money I was making made all that stuff just too available.

With God, It's No Coincidence

I believe it is no coincidence that after years of drinking and getting high, a Drug Enforcement Agency Officer caught me...and then let me go. It was God! He and the DEA Officer wanted me to get my life right. The detox program I went to helped me do just that, and now God helps me keep it that way. He's given me friends like Eugene Robinson and Karl Payne to encourage me. And with their help and lots of prayer, my wife and I have made our marriage one of love.

Sleeping Like A Baby

For years I didn't sleep well, just waiting for my pager to go off with some drug dealer at the other end. Now Jesus allows me to lay my head down with no guilt, no worries. I know now that my extreme behavior, the addictive lifestyle, was just proof that I had an empty spot in my heart. Only God can fill up our hearts. He can make the difference if we let Him.
