Chris Greenway's 2008 Rising Star

Trent Cotchin

Round Eight

The Rising Star this week is a genuine Rising Star of the game. First gamer Trent Cotchin. Cotchin was taken by the Tigers with selection no 2 in the 2007 draft.

Many observers felt that he was the best player in the draft and if Carlton had not had a pressing need for a ruckman Trent would have gone at no 1 overall. He unfortunately broke his foot in the last TAC cup game of the season and had to miss the draft camp and consequently didn't have a proper pre season, achilles tendon problems related to the foot fracture meant that his first game of the season was delayed until round 4 and was for Coburg reserves, even playing part of the game he still dominated and was close to best on ground. Continued strong performances for Coburg had him on the verge of selection for this game and when the weather turned out wet big man Adam Pattison was dropped and Cotchin came in. He was in the action straight away, crumbing a ball off the pack and kicking an opportunistic goal, thus joining that illustrious group who kicked a goal with their first ever kick in league football. He looks like he belongs, mature body, great skills, football brain. He finished the day with 2 goals (should have been 3, but for a brain explosion running into an open goal in the last quarter) and 16 possessions. This kid is a keeper and he is going to be a gun.
