We didn't have any difficulties finding things to talk about even though there wasn't much to see along the way. I was a little bit surprised because driving across Kansas can be monotonous but conversation made the trip quite pleasant actually. The first BIG surprise came when we drove through Cheyenne Bottoms, a wildlife/game preserve area. Apparently, Cheyenne Bottoms is a bowl. In recent years it's been a big, dried-up basin but not after these rains! It seemed like we were driving in the Florida Keys on one of those suspension bridges with water to both sides of the roadway. It wasn't too far out on the left, but it went as far as the eye could see to the right, and that's quite a distance because this part of Kansas is FLAT! It was very cool. The fence posts were completely underwater part of the time; I suppose what is usually dry was about 4' deep with water. The wind was blowing like, well, like it always does in Kansas, and there were waves on the water. Tresa and I both agreed that a photo wouldn't do it justice without something to show depth perception, so on we went but not without being amazed!
The next crazy surprise was the tornado damage. The trees were stripped of many of their branches, and we saw some outbuildings that had been destroyed. It was a brutal May in |
