Sunday 24/08/03
Richmond V Port Adelaide
Telstra Dome Round 21

By Chris Greenway

The build up was pretty much as you'd expect for 1st vs 12th. Having sewn up top spot Port had very little incentive to win this and they proved that by resting some of their better players. All Richmond were playing for was pride and the past couple of weeks had proved that most of the playing list don't even have a lot of that. Pettifer was dropped due to injury and Rogers came back in. Then another no win move, drop McGrath who has a future and replace him with Hyde who will more than likely be delisted at the end of the season. On Saturday the bombshell dropped. On Saturday morning the greatest player to ever pull on a yellow and black Guernsey, the mighty Jack 'Captain Blood' Dyer passed away aged 89. The club went into shock, in fact this shook the football world. Richmond now had a reason to play well, do it for Jack. I felt it was poor form that Port didn't, as many other clubs did, don black armbands, then again why would a made up club that has no sense of tradition and draws it's supporters from the lower end of the food chain be bothered to honour an icon of the game? The Tigers started off well and kicked the first goal for the 3rd week in a row, only this time it was Krakouer not Rodan. After that Port took it away courtesy of a dominant midfield and a very good Warren Tredrea.

Early in the 2nd quarter the Tigers shook off their lethargy and bit back. Zantuck became a focal point in the forward line and was joined by Houlihan in the 3rd quarter. The Tigers actually drew level in early in the 3rd term, but then Port's class showed out and they eventually cruised to a 20 point win. Mark Williams had the good grace to compliment us on a hard fought match. Tivendale, Newman and Coughlan were as so often this season the Tigers best. Rodan did very little. Zantuck showed with 5 goals that he may be a useful forward when we have a full back line in. Houlihan kicked 5 too, but I think it's a case of a little too late. Fiora also, surprisingly had a good game, hopefully this will improve his trade value.

Next week Hawthorn and the end to a disappointing season, but look out Hawks, the Tigers are dedicating this one to Jack.
