Richmond V Collingwood
MCG Round 16

By Chris Greenway

There wasn't a lot said about the game itself during the week. Many people were of the opinion that it was a foregone conclusion, the Woods were going to win. Interestingly one of these people was Danny Frawley. Maybe someone should take up a collection to buy him a clue, he certainly doesn't seem to have one. Despite this there was a lot of Richmond in the media. Mostly concentrating on why they were in the situation they were. They all said the same thing, it's the playing group. They all try, no doubt about it, but doesn't matter how determined you are if you don't have the ability, and injuries aside, about half of the 22 players who take the park for the Tigers don't have it. This means there needs to be a clean out at the end of the year, but who is responsible for allowing this to happen? No one seems to know, although recruiter Greg Beck has been keeping a very low profile.

At the start of the Collingwood game the Tigers started well with Krakouer kicking a perfect opportunistic goal in the first two minutes of the game. Coughlan took it up to his opponent and Tim Fleming let Nathan Buckley know that he was there. That was about it. The rest of the first half was all Collingwood. They kept an easy 4-goal buffer for most of the half. The Tigers are totally clueless, without hope. Persistence saw us outscore the Magpies in the 3rd quarter, but the game was all over. Rodan had a good second half in defence, so at least he's learned something from the first round where he was all at sea in defence. They hammered us in the last 15 minutes of the final quarter to cruise to a 69-point win. The best for Richmond were the usual suspects: Chaffey, A Kellaway, Tivendale, Newman and Coughlan. It's been that way all season and just to top things off Rory Hilton ended the night in hospital with broken ribs and a suspected punctured lung. Sorry Hilts, I'd say that's the end of the AFL career. Next week we get to hit rock bottom when the Bulldogs beat us and move off the bottom of the ladder.
