SURPRISE PICK Matt White was not selected by anyone in the 2005 National Draft, but put his name forward for the Pre Season Draft, although he did not expect to be selected. Richmond, due to financial constraints, was widely tipped not to participate, so it was a big shock to everyone when they not only elected to use their selection, but used it on a young unknown rather than an established player looking for a new home. White did his apprenticeship with Coburg and made his way into the senior side at about mid year. He debuted against Fremantle and became a member of the 'kick a goal in your first game' club. Matt White's 2nd half was a standout. He went about his business quietly and efficiently. He was quick and tough, he tackled hard and had polished footskills, he reminded of a young Chris Newman, similar in build and also the fact that he wore 35 (Newman's old number) didn't hurt. One criticism was that he had a tendency to run too far with the ball and was actually pinged for it twice. Matt was beaten early by Daniel Le Cras in the West Coast game, but to his credit he did not drop his head, but got on with the job, took a hard knock in the first half, but took his kick and delivered it to his captain in Kane Johnson who duly kicked the goal. White finished the day amongst the Tigers best in a disappointing day for the team overall. Chris
