DOING IT THE HARD WAY

Nathan Foley, commonly known as Axel to his teammates hasn't come to AFL football the easy way. Considered to small to make it at the highest level he found himself on Richmond's rookie list playing for Coburg in 2004. Although he had a good season for the VFL affiliate he was still not considered good enough to be guaranteed a senior spot in 2005 and remained on the rookie list.

Injuries in 2005 saw Nathan elevated from the rookie list to the seniors and he was even given a game. He didn't get a lot of time on the ground and was dropped back to Coburg a staggering 47 possession game gave him the senior berth back. Although he didn't play a lot of minutes he did show that he had what it took, wasn't afraid to dive under a pack and was able to bring other players into the game. He was quick thinking and creative.

Made a senior listed player for the first time in 2006 Foley set about carving out a career for himself. Despite his size his courage and willingness earned him a few fans both at his own club and elsewhere, he also had the rare knackof looking dangerous every time he got the ball.

A series of strong performances netted Foley a Rising Star nomination (Richmond's 3rd for the season) and gave him a lot of confidence for the match against Carlton. He kicked another miracle goal and a stunning 10 centre clearances.

Nathan Foley did it the hard way, but he has well and truly now arrived in the big time.
