CAPTAIN KANE

There was a kid who grew up in Melbourne's Eastern Suburbs and dreamt of playing for his side; the Mighty Richmond Tigers. His name is Kane Johnson and the vagaries of the draft saw him go to Adelaide and at a young age find himself a member of the competition's dominant midfield and the owner of two Premiership medallions.

Richmond first tried to bring Kane back home at the end of the 2001 season, when key position player Ben Holland wanted to go back home to South Australia, that deal fell through and Kane spent another year with the Crows. Then at the end of 2002 when Adelaide wanted a high draft pick to give the Kangaroos for fallen star Wayne Carey, Richmond handed them pick 4 (it later became pick 2, due to the penalties levied on Carlton for salary cap breaches) and received Johnson in return.

After two solid seasons in the midfield Kane was given the captaincy. Kane's loyalty and love of the Richmond Football Club can never be questioned. Despite the two Premierships Kane still lists his proudest football moment as the first time he took the field wearing a Richmond jumper.

Ever since the retirement of 'The Glove' Duncan Kellaway Richmond has been looking for a tagger who can cut the opposition playmakers out of the game. Captain Kane is that man. In the past two weeks he has shut down the dangerous Shaun Burgoyne (3 possessions) and the 1997 number 1 draft pick; Travis Johnstone. Although the Tigers did lose on Friday night it would have been far worse if Johnson had not worn his opponent like a shadow and dramatically reduced his impact on the game. Performances like that are what won Kane the captaincy and I can only imagine how it fires up his young players when they see his efforts.
