Duncan Kellaway

Duncan Kellaway
By Chris Greenway

Duncan Kellaway. He's had many names: Dunc, Killer, Kellaway I and The Glove. For me one word sums up Duncan Kellaway: Courage. The man is guts personified. I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen him stand under a ball and just know that he's going to get hit and not even flinch. He's not just a good mark, he's also smart and tough, he can't kick, but he's not a bad handball. When he played as a defender week after week I used to see him take on players who were bigger and stronger and regularly beat them. Interestingly enough Wayne Carey never worked Kellaway out.

Up until 1998 Duncan was one of our most reliable players. Round 9 in 1998 disaster struck. Duncan ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament and that was the last we saw of him until the start of 1999. He initially tried to slot back into his defender role and it was Jeff Gieschen, not Danny Frawley, who decided to try him as a tagger and Duncan was reborn as The Glove. Tagging played to Duncan's strengths, his toughness and courage and minimized his weakness; kicking. In 2000 Andy fell over his leg in Adelaide against Port and he did the other knee! Duncan has not been the same since that. The injuries have just caught up with him. He spends more time on the injured list than on the park. It's a crying shame after all that Duncan has done for Richmond that he has to limp around hoping that his body can carry him through a few games. I hope he can realize when enough is enough and go out in a blaze of glory rather than a sad Scott Turner style farewell without even being able to play in the game where the fans say goodbye and thanks for all the great memories.

Agree? Disagree? Tell me about it! I'll post your comments here, too!

Duncan Kellaway. Well, what can I say but what an unlucky sod. Love him to death but his injuries are destroying him.
