Australian Quirk
by Steve Parrish

Overview
From the Publisher
Quirk is unique: it has evolved from over thirty years of Steve’s journeys, “hunting for quirk”, throughout Australia and covers a diverse range of subject matter and localities. Steve’s stories, sometimes personal, sometimes touching, but most often amusing, add vigour to this faithful yet eye-brow-raising portrayal of a uniquely quirky continent.

My thoughts
I recently received this book as a gift for my birthday. I sat down and read it immediately, loving every page of it! If you've ever been on vacation and have unexpectedly gone out of your way to see the Giant Ball of Twine, if you've ever gotten sucked into The Wooden Bowl Store after seeing the signs for 200 miles, if you've ever found yourself in Wall Drug for "free water" ... you'll like this book! :-)

Favorite Passage
In Australia's Outback, pub walls are often festooned with curios and unusual memorabilia, each piece of which comes with its own unique tale. The list of mementos has little consistency -- coins, paper currency, number plates (although why anyone would carry a Kansas USA number plate deep into the AUstralian Outback beats me), prison leg irons, rabbit traps, bottles, stubby holders, pipes, undies, bras, shoes, animal skins, autographs and, quite commonly, polaroids of grinning travellers with one arm slung around a leather-faced "bushie" and the other raising a "coldie" to the local watering hole.
