Everyday Devils and Angels
by Michael Leunig

Overview
From the Publisher:
'There was once a man who could no longer believe things that were said. All he could trust was sighing, sobbing, swearing, screaming and singing. If you asked him why he no longer believed, he would sigh... He would sob... He would scream and swear. And then he would start to sing like a bird.'

My thoughts
This is the first book I read in 2006! Loving Leunig as I do, it is fitting for me that I should choose a Leunig book to open my literary new year! :-)

One of my favorite cartoons is on the last page of this book: The Grand Picnic. If I could have that painted as a huge mural on a wall in my home I would do so! I just love it!

Favorite Passage
The old, old dog

"Buy me!"
"Buy me!" yelled the products,
but he couldn't hear any more.

"Watch me!" cried
the television.
"Read me!" cried the magazines
but he couldn't hear
them any more.

"Drive me!" screamed
the car.
"Notice me" shrieked
the celebrity but he
couldn't hear them
any more.

"Hello" said a gentle
voice and hearing it
he turned to see an old dog.

"Hello and welcome to
a new part of your
life," said the old
dog smiling at him.

"It won't be very flash,"
said the old dog, "and it
wouldn't rate very highly
on an opinion poll but
there'll be loyalty and
warmth and time
enough to rest" said the
old, old dog.
