Centimetre Perfect: The Classic Commentary
by Dennis Cometti
Overview
From the Publisher
At last, the definitive collection of funny and brilliantly clever quotes from football's favourite commentator - Dennis Cometti.
For thirty years or so, the urbane Dennis Cometti has called AFL matches, first on radio and then on television, providing a parade of remarks that have become known as 'Cometti-isms'. 'Centimetre perfect' and 'bobbing up like a cork in the ocean' have become his trademark phrases, entering the vernacular of football commentary.
My thoughts
If you've known me for long, you know that I love my footy so of course I'd love this book! Centimetre Perfect is a collection of comments made by a famous Aussie Rules commentator in Australia. Think Howard Cossell and then, well, forget Howard Cossell completely! Dennis Cometti is nothing like Howard Cossell! But I think I made my point just the same!
I admit that I didn't understand all the wisecracks but the large majority of them were hits and are hilarious! Even a newcomer to the sport will find humor in these quips!
Favorite Passage
Andrew Shipp was a fearless but lightly-framed Docker of the late nineties -- a dangerous combination in the AFL. The former Springvale star was no stranger to hard knocks.
"Andrew is once again slow to get up. But he, more than most, must realize ... Shipp happens."
In 2002, young West Coast Eagles speedster Callum Chambers started 13 games on the bench. Not every player enjoys that role but that season Challum thrived in it.
"Chambers has spent so much time on the bench this season he probably gets his mail delivered there."
Few players tougher than Glenn Archer have ever played the game. But the Kangaroo champ is rarely, if ever, victorious. In fact, Archer seems to play to his own admirable code of honour.
"Archer is a bully. But he's not a mean bully. He's more a teacher. The kind of guy who'll take your lunch money ... and invest it for you."
