Kangaroos 14.12.96 - St Kilda 10.10.70

I wasn't able to catch the Richmond game this week because as I mentioned in my Tiger report, it came on in the middle of the night. BUT...I was able to listen to the Roos/Saints game via the audio feed on the Internet so I thought I'd share my thoughts on it.

Yibbida Yibbida!

A radio broadcast by Rex Hunt is an experience in and of itself! I'd forgotten how crazy he is and how wound up he gets! You won't fall asleep when Rex Hunt is calling a game no matter how late it is in the US!

In fact, for those of you who aren't used to Aussie lingo, you'll love the novelty of the game no matter who's calling it! Get used to hearing "mongrel" and "good on ya", among other creative Aussie slang! And if Rex Hunt is the announcer, expect to hear something about "the fat lady" singing! You'll probably also hear him sing, which isn't necessarily a good thing!

Something I haven't mentioned yet is how fast paced footy is, especially in comparison to NFL football. There's no such thing as commercial breaks or TV time-outs. They run non-stop throughout four periods of play. It's SO exciting! The players are incredibly fit aerobically, and their endurance is amazing!

When there's a fumble, there's a scramble for the ball. There's no stoppage of play. Bodies are flying everywhere, and keep in mind that the players are not wearing helmets or pads! Occasionally the ball gets held up and the official has to bounce the ball. If you haven't seen a ball up, a vague comparison is a jumpball in basketball where both teams have a chance to come up with the footy.

The Kangaroos/Saints game was sensational! I tuned in at the 18 minute mark of the the first quarter when the Roos were 2.2.14 and St Kilda was 4.2.26. Think about that -- 10 scores in the first 18 minutes of real-time play. That's exciting! The Saints held the lead throughout the first quarter and led by 12 points at quarter time.

The second quarter was pretty steady right up to the end when the Roos kicked a goal to put them in the lead by a point just before halftime! I'd thought St Kilda had the momentum so I was surprised when the Roos pulled ahead!

The third quarter was terrific! The score went back and forth, remaining close the entire quarter! It was GREAT football! At three quarter time the Saints were up by a point.

The final quarter was the determining quarter. Roos all the way. While St Kilda remained at 10.9.69, the Roos went to 11.9.75, then 11.10.76, then 11.11.77, then 11.12.78, then 12.12.84. When the siren sounded, the Roos had won by 26 points.

The score is not indicative of the contest. It was much closer throughout three quarters of football, but as it often seems to happen, the victor pulled away in the final quarter. It was a great game to listen to, and Aussie Mark, if you're reading, Good on ya! Your Kangaroos came through for you!
