Jim Zorn on striking (Feb. 24, 1982):
“As a Christian, I really feel that—in God’s word, the way I read it,
the way I see it—when you sign a contract with a person you have
made a covenant with that person. You have vowed by putting your
name on that contract, or your handshake, or whatever, that you’re
going to carry out what the contract said. Okay, I have signed a contract with the Seattle Seahawks, whether the collective bargaining
agreement is up or not, my contract is still valid. So, in my conviction
spiritually, it doesn’t matter what the issue is. I said I was excited
about signing the contract when I put my name on it. I said it suits me
just fine. I’m here to play. . . Even if the issues I wanted were the top
priority for collective bargaining—guaranteed contracts, high-base
salaries, free-agency—if it came to a strike I couldn ‘t strike. I would
support it totally and I would be giving every effort I could to try to
get everybody to see that this is what we need, but when it came right
down to it I couldn’t strike.”
