Seattle 14 - Jacksonville 26
I will admit that I didn't get to watch this game live. A family obligation took me out of town for the weekend so I didn't get to see the video until late Sunday evening. By the time I sat down to view the tape, I knew the outcome, I'd heard the reviews from fans, I'd read my e-mail and I'd seen some stats.
I popped the tape in ... first play of the game, Josh Scobey fumbled the kick-off return. Aaaauuuggghhh. I understood exactly what everyone had been saying. Same old Seahawks. Already. But as I watched, I was pleasantly surprised to see a Seahawks team that played OK. We had some great plays. In the first half our defense held the Jags to two field goals in spite of giving them a turnover and terrific field position. Hasselbeck was putting up some good numbers and our receivers were making some terrific receptions. Alex Bannister leapt for a pass putting him in a dangerous position for a huge hit despite his previous injuries. Shaun Alexander found a big hole that led to a touchdown. I was impressed! The Jags weren't doing themselves any favors, and we were definitely in the ballgame. Then the second half came. As has been the case in past years, we were our own worst enemy. It's not that the Jags were that great, it's that we were that bad.
And yet we were still in the game. We had a chance to pull it out despite 5 turnovers and a handful of other risky plays that were near disasters. Trufant had an excellent play in which he knocked the ball right out of the quarterback's hand for a fumble. We batted some passes down; we dished out some pressure. We did some things right! Unfortunately we did a lot more things wrong. Fielding a punt inside the 5 and then running backwards to the goal line just isn't acceptable. Where's Rusty Tillman when you need him? We've got to protect Hasselbeck; we've got to open some holes for our running backs. Some might say the weather hampered our efforts, and perhaps it did. Dark jerseys in the heat and humidity of a playing field that exceeded 120 degrees F didn't help. Bottom line is that we weren't good enough -- but I think there's plenty to be positive about. I want to wrap this up with a quote from Jurevicius, who said: “We can resurrect next week with a win against the Falcons at home.” Go Seahawks! |
