It was 1980...I was in grade school, and knew nothing about football. My brother came home from school one day with a poster showing the NFL helmets, and I chose the Seattle Seahawks as my favorite. It wasn't long after that when I accidentally came across a Seahawks game on TV. Again, I didn't know much about football prior to this game, however, I watched and decided that I really enjoyed the sport. I made a point to watch the Seahawks whenever possible (growing up in the Chicago area didn't present many opportunities, though). I quickly became obsessed with Seattle - in those days my Christmas list consisted of anything the JC Penney catalog had that was Seahawks related. I even decided that I wanted to play football, with the hopes of being a Seahawk someday. Even though I thought I was the best receiver during the boulevard games with my friends, going into highschool, I had yet to play an organized game. I was small, and had never been taught anything about playing, so I decided to go to a football clinic on the east coast (the reason I chose that one is that Curt Warner was going to be there, fresh off his record breaking rookie season in '83). I was more excited about seeing Curt than attending the camp. To get ready for camp, instead of weight training or running, I prepared by making a ceramic football player in the likeness of Curt Warner - ceramics were a hobby of my grandmother. I chased Curt down as he was finished with his portion of the camp, and I gave him the ceramic (with a little note under its arm with my address). Curt sent a personally signed poster telling me I was his biggest and best fan. Now I'm 30, and I have it framed and on the wall in my basement. Although I never played high school football, that camp provided me with a memory I'll never forget. Now that I'm older, I make a point of catching a Seahawk game in person each year. Last year was the opener in Philly. Other years have seen me in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, and Kansas City to cheer the Hawks on. This season I'll be at the second game of the year at Soldier Field. Because of an attraction to the blue and green bird on a silver helmet, I'm a Seahawk fan for life!
