“I wear my faith quietly. That's who I am. That's how I like it." -- Beckys-Place.com

So many times in professional sports we hear only the negative stories of athletes. Like the title of the book by Deion Sanders, Power, Money and Sex, there are indeed many stories of abuse, addiction and immorality in the NFL. However we often sensationalize the negatives and overlook the stories of discipline, courage and faith, as perhaps we overlooked the rest of the title of Mr. Sanders' book, How Success Almost Ruined My Life.

A few years ago I had the honor and privilege of speaking with a man I greatly admire for his values and leadership on and off the field -- a legend of football and a member of the Seahawks Ring of Honor, Mr. Dave Krieg. Talking with him was absolutely huge to me; a thrill I cannot begin to describe. (Thank you, Mike, for facilitating the phone call! You're awesome!) I couldn't wait to share my excitement with a group of people who are very special to me -- my Disciple Bible Study group. Their reaction was warm, enthusiastic and supportive, and I went home that evening thinking about their comments, particularly those of Bert who made reference to a line in the Prayer of Jabez, "Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory." I thought about it a lot. I thought about the players who speak openly of their convictions. I thought about me.

I wear my faith quietly. That's who I am. That's how I like it.

But as I thought about the Prayer of Jabez, it occurred to me that I have an opportunity right now to express my faith through a medium in which I'm very comfortable: my love of football, my love of the Seahawks, this web site! So with the support of my church family and my Disciple family, with the on-going encouragement of my dear friend and mentor Leigh, with support of Christian fans who have written to me, with the stories of courage and faith of men who have donned the silver, blue and green of our beloved Seattle Seahawks, YES! I'll step out of my comfort zone to make a public confession of my faith.

Oh that You would bless me indeed,
and enlarge my territory,
that Your hand would be with me,
and that You would keep me from evil,
so that I may not cause pain!

I invite you to read the stories of Seahawk players who live their faith. May their stories be a source of strength, inspiration and celebration for you, and may your blessings be rich and bountiful.
