“I love to run down the field on special teams, with my hands raised, giving God the glory.”-- Tim Terry

It’s not about me – it’s about God.
It took me a while to learn that lesson. For a long time, I thought it was about me. I thought I had arrived, and I thought all the things God had blessed me with I had earned myself.
I started playing football in the 6th or 7th grade, and played throughout high school. I went to Temple University, got a wonderful education, and had a good career. Then I signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as a free agent, was released, re-signed with the Bengals at the end of the year, and the following year played with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the Canadian Football League. Then it was on to the Kansas City Chiefs, where I was again released, and signed with the Seattle Seahawks.
Throughout the whirlwind of places God took me through, I would always ask, "Why me?" I didn’t understand why I was going through the things I was. Now, looking back, I realize it was all for God’s glory, and for my benefit. God was getting my attention, reminding me that it’s not about me – it’s about Him.
I had grown up in the church, but now I realize that I was doing what my parents wanted me to do, not what I wanted to do. In college, I would go to Bible Study, but the next day I would be out doing things I shouldn’t all over again. I wasn’t living right, and I wasn’t living the Word.
But God didn’t abandon me. In fact, He refined me. He had a plan for me, and still has a plan for me. He has helped me become a better football player, and He has helped me become a better man.
I have learned that without God, there is no life. With Him, there is abundance. Without God, there is only empty gratification. With Him there is joy. He opens His hands and gives us things we can’t even fathom – things like peace, and joy and hope. He gave us His Son, who died and rose again for us.
I am so appreciative of what God has given me. Even standing on the sidelines, listening to the National Anthem is a spiritual experience for me. I find myself saying, "God, thank You for this time." I’m happy to be playing, and I’ll be happy however long God allows me to play. I love to run down the field on special teams, with my hands raised, giving God the glory. I want to make the most of every moment, to maximize each and every day, for it is a window in time God has given me, and is a true blessing.
Of course, I am more than a football player. God has a plan for me outside of football as well. And while I don’t necessarily know what that plan is, or how it will work out, I know that it will be what He desires.
After all, it’s not about me – it’s about God.
