CHAPTER THREE
Seattle and Fremont (continued from previous page)

Pat, being a breakfast person, wanted something more substantial than the free, continental breakfast provided by the hotel. Me? I’m not much of a breakfast person. A bowl of fruit would have been just fine, but it was such a nice morning that I hated to waste it indoors, so Pat and I grabbed the complimentary hotel shuttle, had them drop us off at the Public Library (Where else?!) and we took off walking in search of a breakfast nook. I never intended to walk clear down to the Market but that’s where we ended up! I LOVE the market! Have I remembered to say that?!

I wasn’t disappointed at all that we were looking for breakfast among the fresh fruits and vegetables! That’s when we discovered the Homemade Cheese shop!

I’m not sure if the cheese shop has been there for years or if it’s new, but it was new to me this year. I fell in love with it instantly! They actually have windows where you can watch the cheese being made, which is sort of creepy and something I probably don’t need to see, but cool at the same time. We sampled some of the cheeses and talked about buying some, wondering if we could get it home before it got icky. I will say this: On my next trip, I’m getting some of the macaroni and cheese that was billed as the world’s finest! I must have some!

I took Pat into the vinegar and oils shop that I’d discovered the day before. He too thought it was terrific and bought a couple of bottles of flavored oil. It’s always fun to share the discoveries along the way!

Quite by accident we found a wonderful alleyway a half a block off the main drag in Pike Place Market full of interesting shops and eateries, which I believe they call Post Alley. I almost bought a whimsical dip set consisting of three brightly painted bowls on a tray. I steered away from the impulse purchase, fully aware that I’ll regret it for the rest of my life. Don’t you always pine for the things you don’t buy on vacation?!?!

After looking at every breakfast eatery in the area, and taking much more time than we’d planned, we settled for brunch at Sisters European Snacks located in the alleyway. Their sandwiches were made on their trademark focaccia bread, a very good choice. My Sicillienne sandwich is described as fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, and roma tomatoes on Italian Foccacia bread with extra virgin olive oil and fresh herbs, served with a small house-salad. It was a wonderful breakfast sandwich and already I want to go back again!

Since it was a cool but lovely day in the city, we opted for al fresco dining. There were a few tables for two lined up in a row outside the shop, all of which were brightly painted with lively scenes. At the same time I backed off from taking a photo of a table top because of a little … extra … decoration, a feather floated down from above right onto the table where Pat was sitting. I looked up and nearly fell over with laughter! Directly above the row of tables was an overhang on which a line of pigeons, “rats with wings” as Craig calls them, were nesting! Not a good place for al fresco dining!!! We moved to a different table quickly as some fellow diners, a father and his young son, giggled at our predicament!

More! More! I want to keep reading!
