CHAPTER THREE
Seattle and Fremont (continued from previous page)

Getting around the downtown area of Seattle on foot is easy enough. Having a car is an added bonus. Craig drove us to the downtown area, we found parking a few blocks away and walked through Pioneer Square to F.X. McRorys. As we were waiting for a light to change, we noticed an elderly lady crossing the street. She had long hair, was slightly hunched and was wearing dark clothing. She no sooner crossed the street than the lights went out.

All of them!

One minute Pioneer Square was lit up, the next it was pitch black!

With absolute perfect timing and delivery, Craig shouted, “She’s a WITCH!”

We all burst out laughing, and then enjoyed it even more when, about a block later, the lights came back on! (We subsequently discovered that this a regularly occurring phenomenon rather than some sort of black magic cast by a woman who is, no doubt, quite kind and gentle. On our way back to the car later that evening, we experienced the brief blackouts two or three times.)

We entered F.X. McRorys in search of the SeahawkSal Family Reunion. SeahawkSal has had a website for a number of years, hosting weekend Seahawks events annually in Seattle and in cities where the Seahawks have played away games. I was hoping to find Brian Oakes there, aka New Yawk Seahawker. I’d met Brian a couple of years earlier at a Midwest Sea Hawkers event in St. Louis.

Brian recognized me right off the bat and greeted me with a warm welcome and a hug. Karyn, Craig, and Pat settled in to one of the few remaining tables while Brian took me around, introducing me to others in the room. I may as well admit that I’m no good with names. I’m one of those people who shake your hand and tell you it’s nice to meet you, and then kick myself because I realize I didn’t retain your name. Seconds after an introduction, pffft, it’s gone. Thus it’s with regret that I’m unable to share the name of a very nice gentleman I met, who stood up from his seat, hugged me and said enthusiastically, “YOU’RE Becky?!?!? I just went to your website today for the first time!!!”

He then proceeded to tell me that he put me through a little quiz of his, looking for specific answers from the Spirit of ’76 portion of my site. Did I really know who the first draft pick of the Seahawks was? He said I passed with flying colors, much to my delight – and relief!!

He was such an amusing and pleasant person to talk with. He told me of his plans to open a restaurant/pub, the details of which I shall keep to myself lest someone borrow his novel concept and beat him to the punch. I will say this though: I want to be at the grand opening! I think it’s a sensational idea!

I no sooner sat down back down at the table than Brian was motioning me to come forward again. He asked me if I’d met Mike Flood, Vice-President of Community Outreach for the Seahawks. I was floored when Mr. Flood knew of me and my site, and honored when he asked me to join him for a few moments. Mike is an affable man who takes his responsibilities within the organization seriously. We had a nice conversation about Seahawks websites, the Seahawks in general, and about how Mike found his way into the Seahawks organization.

More! More! I want to keep reading!
